The Test by Indra

On the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti, I have written a small incident from his childhood life when he was a young Prince and how he passed the test by Indra.

The Test by Indra

When Vardhaman (before taking Diksha Lord Mahavira's name) entered the 9th year of his age, his parents thought that both martial and formal education must be imparted to him so that it will benefit him as a Prince in future. Thus they decided to send him to school.
When he went to the school, he offered his respect to the teacher just like any other ordinary student, in spite of having all the worldly knowledge since his birth. The teacher started the class and gave him the first lesson of alphabets. Vardhaman listened silently. After sometime the teacher called him out and said," Prince! I think you are not paying attention, why don't you repeat whatever I have taught  till now?" In reply, Vardhaman recited the whole series of alphabets and the teacher was surprised.
While he was trying to accept this surprising capacity of the little boy, an old Brahmin (Indra disguised as a Brahmin scholar) walked into the class. The teacher greeted him and offered him a seat. The Brahmin asked some questions of grammar. The teacher could not answer and looked down in disgust. The Brahmin smiled and said," maybe this new student of yours will solve my doubts. If you allow me, I may ask him?"
The teacher consented and the old Brahmin put his complex doubts before Vardhaman. Little Vardhaman, without hesitating gave correct and appropriate answers. The teacher stared dumbfounded at the little boy.
The old Brahmin smiled and said to the teacher," please, don't feel insulted. I just came here to take a test of Prince Vardhman, to see if he really has all the worldly knowledge or not, and by solving all my complex doubts he has proved that he is the Sun of Knowledge of this Era. He is the future Lord Mahavira, the omniscient."
It is believed that Indra compiled all his questions and Vardhaman's answers into a book named ' Aindra Vyakaran ' ( The grammar of the Indra ).
