Shirshasana - The King of Asanas





Shirshasana - The King of Asanas. Shirsh means head, thus Shirshasana means standing on bead. Before performing this Asana one should follow proper instructions and know the precautions.



Instructions - Keep a pillow under the head to rest the head on it while performing the Asana.

Place your head on pillow and then interlock your fingers and place it behind your ahead.

Get your body into the mountain pose and slowly get your waist in line with the head.

Once the head and waist are in line, then lift the toes off the ground and get your whole body in one line.

Maintain the Asana for 15 seconds. The timing can be slowly progressed up to 3 minutes only.

To finish the Asana, slowly get down the legs on floor followed by waist and relax.



Precautions -

Not to be done 3 hours post meal.

Not to be done post physical exertion.

Not to be done by patients with blood pressure, ear, eye, neck problems.

Consult some expert in case of confusion or difficulty.

Make sure you don't jerk, twist or bend your neck.

Shirshasana should be followed by Tadasana.

Nervous system becomes strong

Endocrine gland activity becomes regulated

Hernia, Asthma, Diabetes, Headache etc diseases are benefitted

Chakrasana - The wheel pose

Technique : Lie on your back. Breath in and take your ankles closer to your buttocks. Both the palms on the floor near the ear and fingers facing towards the shoulder. Breath in and gradually raise your whole body upwards without moving your palms and feet off the floor. Neck should be kept lose hanging downwards and the whole body will look like a wheel. Hold this position for a few seconds then gradually lower down your body back to the starting position. Benefits : Fingers, Palms, Elbows, Arms, etc become strong. Weight bearing capacity of limbs improves. Reduces the risk of tremors in fingers in old age. Practicing this Asana gives relief for low back pain, neck pain and upper back pain ( to be done post the advice of a physiotherapist only if it is practiced for pain relief). Stretches the whole body muscles, spinal cord, ligaments, lungs and other internal organs thus inducing relaxation in them and increasing the flexibility, agility and durability.
